Ship Crew

Although all our crew are sailors, some have extra qualifications and experience. They ALL have some incredible tales to tell

Charles Burns

Charles has had a passion for the sea for many years. He is known as a "ketch man"; sailed in the UK and has almost circumnavigated Australia by tall ship!

He has  Master <24m  (Master 5) and Marine Engine Driver 3 certificates.

He has crewed on tall ships The Lady Nelson, Duyfken, Windeward Bound, as their Marine Engineer and is now part owner of SV Rhona H.

Charles still sails on STV Windeward Bound to help out; just to kep his hand in on a bigger marine engine and as Mate when Sarah asks for back up crew.

When not on classic boats, he will be looking at classic cars!

Julie Porter

Originally from Upper Hutt, NZ, Julie trained as a Registered Nurse at Christchurch Polytechnic and then completed degrees in Management, Mental Health, Tropical Medicine, Adult Education and Training and is now working towards a PhD combining her interests of mental health, education, and rural health.

Julie is a self confessed tall ship tragic. Her first experience of the life on he ocean wave was with the Spirit of Adventure in 1982. This was an experience not to be forgotten, especially sailing across Cook Strait under the command of Captain Nick Hylton. Then followed Outward Bound Anakiwa, the tall ship Tradewind all before heading to Australia.

Julie relocated from rural North Queensland with 3 cats and dog to Tasmania in 2010 and loves the Tasmanian lifestyle:  but especially the chance to act as a volunteer crew member on Hobart's Tall Ships; the highlight being the Tall Ship Review in Sydney during 2013 and now part owner of SV Rhona H.

All these roles, even volunteering, has enabled linkages with Mental Health Nurses, the wider community and the contact provides opportunities to promote the ACMHN and the mental health agenda.

Julie is now studying towards master <24metres.

Will Armstrong

Will (known as mini-Matt) as he is so much like Matt Morris came to Hobart in 2007. We met Will on Windeward Bound and asked him to help out as crew on Rhona H as his sailing skills are suberb.

Will hopes to work towards Master <24m and MED3; we hope sailing wih the Rhona H crew will provide some different experiences. He was one of the Kettering Storm (February 2014) heroes when he helped the overturned catamaran come alongside and looked after the lines on Rhona H during the storm

Sally Neil

Sally is another tall ship tragic! Her background as a nurse with lots of tall ship experience, especailly Lady Nelson is extremely valuable. She is also one of the health crew with mental health nursing qualifications

Sally has the BEST sense of humour and it's always fun sailing with her.
